Training Tips: "Down"

Teaching your dog the "down" command can be a little bit more tricky than "sit". Your dog might not want to lay down when training making it hard for everyone. Here are some tips on teaching your dog to lay down.

1. Use a clicker. Using a clicker to train your dog to lay down is going to help you so much! Teach your dog that the sound of the clicker means "treat". Then, when your dog lays down on its own, click the clicker and reward your pup with a treat. You don't wave to wait around for your dog to lay down, just bring the clicker with you whenever your dog is present.

2. Make sure that when your dog lays down, their bum is down on the floor. If your dog is not actually in a laying down position and is hovering, do not reward him or her until they lay all the way down.

3. Like any other skill you would teach your dog, take little breaks so that you and your pup stay calm.
