Dogs can be pretty expensive. Here are some great tips to save money on your dog!
1. Make your own dog food.
Making your own dog food could not only save you money, but also help you to avoid any harmful ingredients in packaged dog food. Although this can take a little bit of time out of your week, it will be helpful overall. I would recommend making your food for the week, then serving it as needed. There are many dog food recipes out there that you can try!
2. Buying dog products online.
Buying your dog supplies online is A LOT less expensive than buying your supplies in chain pet stores. As I have mentioned before on this blog, I love two placed in particular. Jefferspet.com and Chewy.com are my go-to online shops for pet products. They have a huge assortment, for a small price. (I am not sponsored or affiliated with any of these companies).
These are two ideas to help you save money on your dog. I use these methods all the time and save so much money every month!

Santa Paws Visited Our Dogs!
This year for Christmas, our dogs got a TON of toys, treats, and other awesome items! Our dogs worked extremely hard in their training and agility this year, so I felt they deserved a treat. Sadly, Callie wasn't so on board with unwrapping the gifts, but Toby went absolutely nuts for it. Now, for the good part.
What my dogs got for Christmas 2016:
The first thing my dogs got were these adorable little dots squeaky toys. I have bought so many of these over the last year. They are a great buy!

My dogs also got two brand new beds! The current beds we had had lasted many years, but I thought it was time for a change.

Another thing a swooped up for my dogs were these Zuke's Mini Naturals Treats- my favorite brand. The dogs each got two packs each (which will be given out in moderation). Toby got a duck flavor and a chicken flavor, and Callie got a pork flavor and a salmon flavor. Yum!

My dogs also go a few more toys, some treats, and a new bandana, but I couldn't find the link to those items!
Merry Christmas from Callie and Toby!

The Time I Had To Put My Dogs Down
The two days I had to put down my dogs, Marley and Sherman, were two of the hardest days of my life. Marley, a black lab, was put down at 11 because of cancer, and Sherman, a yellow lab, was put down at 13 because of kidney problems. I was devastated when Marley got put down, as he was my best friend, but this story is about the time Sherman passed away. I hope this story makes anyone who lost a dog feel better.
The day that Sherman got put down was painful for me. I had been through this 2 years earlier with Marley, and knew how hard this process was. We departed to the vet in the morning, not wanting to let Sherman go. We got to the vet and knew what would happen next. The hardest part was not knowing if I would ever have a dog as great as Marley and Sherman again. We went into the room that was prepared for us, and began to cry. I didn't know if Marley could hear me from doggy heaven, but I knew he was ready for Sherman to join him. We went through the process, which I am not going to describe, as it is extremely sad. When we got home, what happened next surprised us, and made us feel better about losing another dog. We were greeted by an outline of a black lab sitting in my neighbors' yard. Everyone in my family saw it, and we knew it was Marley telling us that Sherman was ok and was in his care. We knew that our dogs were together again, and were safe and happy. From this day on, we know that Marley and Sherman were ok when they dog put down, and were together at last in heaven. Although some people may not believe that we saw what we saw, everyone in my family agreed that Marley was there that day.
I now have two beautiful dogs, and think about Marley and Sherman from time to time. I know that they are safe together, and are happy as can be. I hope that everyone who has lost a dog recently knows that once your dog passes away, it still loves you and will always be there for you. Losing Marley and Sherman was hard, but knowing that they were safe and happy gave me comfort.
R.I.P Marley and Sherman. Brothers, Best Friends, and Great Pals. We remember you always!

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
This poem is beautiful and I knew I should include it.
If you recently lost a pet, things will get better. Your dog still loves you and is waiting for you at Rainbow Bridge.

Picking out the right supplies for your dog can be tricky and expensive. We are counting down 5 must haves for dog owners that will make owning a pup more enjoyable for everyone.
1. Chewy.com (https://www.chewy.com)
Chewy.com is a great website for dog owners who are on a tighter budget. They offer everything you need for your dog, from food to beds, at a fair price you will love.
2. Rawhides A brand of rawhides we love (http://bit.ly/2arwyPK)
Rawhides are great for dogs as long as you always supervise your dog while it is chewing it. Some rawhides are more expensive than others, but there are options that are inexpensive and great quality.
3. Coastal Pet TUFF Dog Collars *Collars (http://bit.ly/2aHOMhv)
We absolutely love these collars. They are amazing quality for an amazing price. The color selection is great, and they are easy to clean. We have no bad things to say about these collars.
4. The Daily Fetch (http://bit.ly/2arxFPx)
The daily fetch is a dog toy that not only squeaks, but crinkles too. We love this toy because of its price, durability, and functionality. Another amazing thing about this toy is the detailing. It has words printed onto it to look just like newspaper!

3 Foods That Are Great For Dogs
For most dogs, dog food is the only food given to them, because their owners don't want to risk making them sick on human food. Did you know that some human foods are actually great for your dog? Here are 3 foods that you can feel good about giving your dog.
1. Pumpkin- Pumpkin is great for dogs that have a sensitive stomach. It is rich in vitamin a and fiber, helping your dog digest with ease.
2. Green Beans: Green beans are great for pups that need to lose weight. Give them to your dog as a treat, they will love them!
3. Cooked Salmon- Salmon is great for your dogs, as it is just like a fish pill for humans. Salmon also contains omega 3 fatty acids that make your pup's fur super shiny!

Bandannas are without a doubt one of the most adorable accessories on a dog, but they are usually only styled in one way. Here are 5 awesome ways to accessorize your pup in a bandana.
1. The Classic- The Classic style is by far the most common way to style your dog's bandana.
To create this look:
a. Fold your bandana into a triangle shape to fit your dog's neck.
b. Tie the bandana around your pup's neck and turn the bandana so it is facing the way you like
2. The Collar- The Collar style is a cute way to add some color to your dog without adding a large bandana.
To create this look:
a. Fold your bandana into a triangle shape
b. Roll the bandana up until it the the thickness of a standard collar.
c. Tie the bandana around your dog's neck
3. The Anklet- Although this style is a bit more complicated to get onto your dog, it looks adroable once on.
To create this look:
a. Fold your bandana into a square shape if possible, if not, fold into a triangle
b. Roll up your bandana until it will fit your dog's ankle
c. Tie on your dog's ankle ( not too tight)
TIP: For best results, use a small bandana, you can make your own but cutting an old one.
4. The Bow- the bow is an adorable way to tie your bandana around your dog's neck.
To create this look:
a. Fold your bandana into a triangle shape
b. Tie your bandana around your dog's neck like you would tie a shoelace- in a bow shape.
5. The DIY- The DIY is great for the crafters out there.
To create this look:
a. Find a material that will be big enough to cut into a bandana shape ( I use old T-Shirts)
b. Cut your material with scissors into a triangle shape big enough to fit your dog's neck.
c. Stretch the material once cut to make it more even.
d. Tie around your dog's neck

Training Tips: "Down"
Teaching your dog the "down" command can be a little bit more tricky than "sit". Your dog might not want to lay down when training making it hard for everyone. Here are some tips on teaching your dog to lay down.
1. Use a clicker. Using a clicker to train your dog to lay down is going to help you so much! Teach your dog that the sound of the clicker means "treat". Then, when your dog lays down on its own, click the clicker and reward your pup with a treat. You don't wave to wait around for your dog to lay down, just bring the clicker with you whenever your dog is present.
2. Make sure that when your dog lays down, their bum is down on the floor. If your dog is not actually in a laying down position and is hovering, do not reward him or her until they lay all the way down.
3. Like any other skill you would teach your dog, take little breaks so that you and your pup stay calm.
I hope these tips helped you to train your dog. Come back soon for more training tips!
